It's the psych telling someone what _they_ think is wrong, and insisting they "correct" it or face coercive handling. When a psychiatrist is being arrogant, that's exactly what he has been trained to do - to believe that he is right and that it is his job to identify the wrongness of the other. The bedrock philosophy precludes humility, listening or learning from the get-go. Just one example: I once made a detailed study of the forms and training procedures recommended & used when faced with a new "patient". These forms & procedures actually came from the Royal Society of Medicine (not even the RCPsych) The procedure was kind of a checklist or what to ask or inspect about the patient, when deciding what "illness" they have, and whether to section them or not. It was kind of a flow-chart. "If they say X, go to step 7." That kind of thing. NOWHERE on the forms, and NOWHERE in the procedure was there ANY hint that the person was NOT ill. There was no, "After you check X and Y, and test for Z, this means they are not ill. Let them go." It doesn't matter who you are. If you end up on that form, on that procedure, you are PRESUMED ILL from the onset. There is no "He's not ill" scenario. The decision that you are ill, is a decision made before they even start the forms. The forms are merely to decide _which_ "illness" you have. Therefore, the decision that you are ill, is UNDOCUMENTED. Because in psychiatry, _everyone_ is "mentally ill". And that's why it is evil. To all those that know me I had electroconvulsive therapy in 2004 and 2005. I like many others were given " misinformed" consent and sadly many of us suffered severe, permanent brain damage. I see myself as lucky survivor because of the support that I received. Many of the survivors have not been as lucky. I am trying to bring the controversy of ECT to an end. There are people who feel that ECT saved theirs lives, I will not dispute that fact. What I do know is that ECT research has been doctored to make it look more effective than it is, and to look safer than it is. I have evidence of this. Even the Royal College of Psychiatrists information sheet is written in a way to bias towards ECT. The machines have never been tested. I am asking for an independent enquiry into ECT that includes a review of patients notes. None of us have ever received an apology. All brain injured patients should get support to learn to live with their brain damage. ECT machines should be rigorously tested in line with all medical procedures in the UK. All existing research should be reassessed and an accurate risk benefit made. If needed, more research should be done. In that way if ECT continues patients can truly sign an informed consent. I also want each patient having ECT to be constantly monitored by a psychologist. I am asking that a support website is created for those in search of information and support. In 2000 the Guardian ran an article about Pat Butterworth who along with 600 patients was trying to sue her psychiatrist. Nothing happened. When in our society was it OK to ignore such side effects? Only when we are psychiatric patients? Following on from these programs it seems hopeful that a full length documentary will be commissioned. I was a doctor but can't work. Using my knowledge to improve mental health care is a more than worthy challenge. To use my skills in such a way and hopefully bring change will give my loss some meaning. Thanks for reading this. Sue Helen Oakley I had O.C.D., self-harm, very severe depression; anorexia, bulimia; many phobias; 4 suicide attempts. I also had a baby. First suicide attempt when she was 15 months. Docs then became 'aware', & prescribed Diazepam. As it causes depression, it was contraindicated. That was 1977. In 1980, I was forcibly withdrawn from it. Torture and then some. I said I had withdrawal symptoms. They said it wasn't addictive, & prescribed a host of anti-psychotics, including Nardil, though my records say I've never been psychotic. Back on Diazepam throughout my second pregnancy. Daughter's heart stopped at birth. She had numerous behacioural problems, after a very quiet, limp babyhood. I was again thrown into a withdrawal hell. In 1995, I was on 4 mg daily, & ready to finish coming off slowly. I was then given an antibiotic called Doxycycline. It threw me into cold-turkey withdrawal, & 3 years of hell followed. In the end I told my doc I'd had enough. Back onto 20 mg daily. Spontaneous (no cause) withdrawal 2001. 40 mg. Again 2006. 60 mg. I started to wonder after recent conversations in this group how much the hell hole I was locked in had actually improved. Iooked up some recent reviews by employees online. Now I am angry and feel like people are still not safe there at all. More reviews of the center in comments. If this is how employees feel about the place, imagine how patients who can't leave feel! Susan Barnett I have a mental health diagnosis. I am not saying I am mentally ill. I have a diagnosis which has legal and political power. As long as I have it people can do what they want to me, have done and do. Ignore, ridicule, abuse. I have to try to control myself under all that for fear of consequences at the hands of the corruption which has imposed it on me. In some people that knowledge brings out real sadism or they think it's a game, fun, a harmless pastime they can get away with. For me, it is torture and I think these people are terrorists. In Victorian times it used to be a regular and legal Sunday activity for people to go to the asylums and laugh at the patients. I get so low sometimes that I think, as someone with my particular Christian background, that that was something Ram Dass might have called fierce grace, as he did when he first had his stroke. He thought his guru had given it to him for his spiritual betterment. In the same way I sometimes think that was then, and is now, an opportunity given by God to people who are out of step and shouldn't be to come back to right mindedness and right speech and right living. To ME, for instance. And I keep refusing. And I think that makes me a bad person. So much shame attached to that, and embarrassment, along with the fear and anger and hopelessness and grief at a life lost. Or stolen, whatever your view or mine at any given time. He was only 39 years old. I was 15 and the 2nd oldest of Eight children. His body was found down river 48 years ago today. Within the next 1 1/2 years I attempted suicide twice ( in a two month period). No one ever asked me why? Instead they admitted me to an inpatient Psych ward and gave me 15 rounds of ECT and some heavy unknown drugs . In 6 weeks I had gained 30 pounds and lost my past, including almost all memories of my Father, except the day he died. My emotional pain was acutely intact. I called the next few years The Black Years. I made inner vows that no one will ever know again what I was really feeling. Needless to say, relationships were really hard for me. I just wanted to share with you all, because you understand that the last thing a grieving teenage girl needed was ECT. I have never recovered what I lost in those six weeks that summer of '69.
